Amazon to offer DVD on Demand service
Amazon.com will begin to offer DVDs of TV shows as soon as 24 hours after the show has aired.
NBC Universal will offer titles ranging from the “Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show” to a compilation of “Where in the World is Matt Lauer?” segments from the “Today” show, according to Kim Niemi, senior vp video, music and product development at NBC Universal Television Distribution. In addition, future titles will be presold during the initial airing of the broadcast.
A&E Home Video will make available more than 1,000 titles from the A&E Network, the History Channel and the Biography Channel, including “Modern Marvels,” “Investigative Reports” and the “Biography” series. Kate Winn, A&E Home Video vp sales and marketing, said Amazon’s search and recommendation features were important to selling these kinds of programs on DVD.

The service will stay with niche market progaming but may move into a broader group of programs. I think it is great that somone else is getting into the business of deliverying TV shortly after it airs. Since the video is on DVD and is of programming from A&E and the Discovery Channel we can hope that the quaility is much greater than that of iTunes and will force Apple to improve the quality it offers on downloads through the video section of iTunes.
