My wife recently got he LG 8600 from Verizon Wireless and rather than purchase the Music software bundle from Verizon we ordered a cable off eBay for ~$7 and are using Bitpim and windows media player to sync the music and to load ringers onto the phone.

Get the LG 8600 or LG 8500 Driver – LG USB Driver (Thanks Mick)

Load Music Onto the LG 8600

  1. Install Any USB drivers which are needed for your cable.
  2. Connect your phone to the PC.
  3. Open Windows Media Player.
  4. Click on the sync tab in Windows Media Player.
  5. Now on your phone hit MENU->Get It Now->Option 1 Music and Tones->6 Sync Music.
  6. Shortly the phone should show up under the devices in Windows Media Player.
  7. Add the songs you want transfered to the sync side of Windows Media Player
  8. Click Sync in Windows Media Player.
  9. Enjoy your music

UPDATE:
Alternate Method using only the sd card, via Darlene in the comments.

  1. Insert the Micro Sd card into your phone and format it.
  2. Remove the card from the phone and insert into your computer.
  3. Use WMP to sync the songs you want into one list in the MUSIC folder on your phone
  4. Enjoy the Tunes
  5. These steps need followed exactly or it won’t work.

Transferring Ringers etc with Bitpim:

  1. Open Bitpim
  2. Choose Edit -> Preferences
  3. Detect Phone, the LG 8600 is supported in the 0.9.10 release.
  4. Click on the ringtone category and then either drag and drop any un-DRMed mp3 into the field.
  5. Bitpim will prompt you to convert the file I suggest you choose 96 for the bitrate.
  6. After the conversion you can clip the song to the 30 second clip you want to use for the ringer.
  7. Click on the Send Data to Phone icon near the top of the Bitpim screen.

You can also use Bitpim to backup or transfer your contacts to the phone as well as many other cool features. If you need help leave a comment and I will do my best.

Alternate Ringtone Method via Nikki in comments

Kind of along the same lines, there’s a REALLY easy way to get homemade ringtones onto your phone even without BitPim or the USB cable. This method creates really high quality ringtones that, in my experience, seem to be even better sounding than the ones you can buy from Verizon — and the selection is only limited to your imagination and the size of your music collection!

1. Create a .mp3 ringtone* on your computer.

2. Rename it to a .qcp file.

3. Send the .qcp file as an attachment in an email to YOURPHONENUMBER@vzwpix.com

3. Open the pix message; under “Options”, select “Save as ringtone”.

=D

*I use the free version of WavePad (http://www.nch.com.au/wavepad/masters.html) to make my ringtones, basically just copying and pasting sections of songs into new files and saving them as new .mp3’s. To keep the file size under 300kb, I make them about 30 seconds long and save them at a constant bitrate of 80 kbps (this option pops up after you save the file as a .mp3).

    Bob,

I’m not sure what filetypes it can handle for video. I would head over to howardforums.com to see if the answer is listed in the FAQ or forum. One thing you may need to do is reduce your resolution to be similar to the phone’s screen size.

    Good luck.

  2. Josh says:

Aspen, Not sure what is going on with your phone, may be time to take it back to your provider.

Wieby, Have you tried moving the files to it via Windows Media Player?

Mike, Bitpim should convert to the correct format for use as a ringer as part of the transfer process.

Stacy, You will need a USB cable.

  3. Bob says:

Hey Josh..well…I broke down and payed 2 bucks to download some silly Maxim Hometown Honey video…for research purposes of course…
and I found out it was a 3gp file… theres actually quite a few converters out there…I tried two and got best results from Alive 3GP Converter… now I can zero my research in on better quality..
    Thanks… :)

I still havent picked up a USB cable for my phone, its a cx8600, so I have another question. How do I make bitpim detect my phone with bluetooth? Ive never used this stuff before so I have no idea what to do. Also bitpim doesnt have a cx8600 option, so could it even detect my phone? Thanks in advance for any help.

    RE: KG800 phone (Liak)

Connect your phone to your PC via the USB cable. Something should pop up like when you want to burn a CD. Scroll down the options to “Open folder to view files” and try dragging and dropping your files. Disconnect, and then try playiing your files in your Music folder.

  13. justin says:

hey josh i tryed ur steps but for step 5 it keeps saying i can not aaccess the program wile its pluged into the pc what do i do?

  14. Ryan says:

    @Josh and/or Darlene
For the sd card only method described above; does the driver for the phone have to be installed for it to work? In other words, if I format the card with the phone should WMP 10 recognize it as “removable disk (G:)” that it is syncing to or should it read it as something along the lines of “LG VX8600″ As is, WMP syncs to “removable disk.” When it does so it breaks up all the music into individual folders by artist and album causing the phone not to recognize the songs. This forces me to manually move every file from the location it syncs to to the “my_music” folder created by the phone before the phone will recognize the files. Would having the driver installed prevent this, and if so, where can I find it? Sorry for the rambling, just wated to make sure you had all the info necessary to hopefully help me. Help for which I will be extremely grateful.

hey josh i tryed your steps but when i get to step 5 it wont let me find the get it now place where may it be … i have the 8500

and got a text msg back tomyself with the file

all it did was save to my “sound” file…
is there no way to make the files on my sound file a rington?

  17. Jason says:

I have an LG 8600 but it isn’t with Verizon, it’s with Telus. Is there a USB data cable I can buy somewhere for it so I’ll be able to use BitPim?

  18. Evie says:

I also have a lg chocolate from telus, bought a cable and disk with drivers from ebay. cable charges phone battery great, but phone is only detected if I hold my tongue just right. Have latest version of bitpim, and sometimes it recognizes my phone, but I continue to get “exception” messages when I try to sync my phone to the bitpim program. It just doesn’t recognize it, or else it doesn’t want to do anything. Have tried downloading drivers like crazy, but not sure which are the correct drivers…I find things with .inf, .sys, .cat, etc, but am not sure which is the one I need to actually click on. Any help would be appreciated.

  19. Josh says:

    Evie »

I believe you want to choose the .inf file.

Even when I had the correct drivers for some of my LG phones getting them to work with Bitpim seemed to require a dance, a windspeed of 22 knots, a temperature of 2 degrees and a sacrificial lamb.

Have you tried telling Bitpim the exact port and the phone type rather than using auto detection?

  20. Evie says:

yes, I tried all the ports and auto that I could choose…however, the sacrificial lamb might just do it…but I’ll try the inf file and see if that works. Will let you know…thanks

  21. Evie says:

ok…that didn’t work, it was just notepad with a bunch of gobbledygook. maybe I’ll just try the other ones and see. I did try post 31 from Darlene, and was able to sync the micro sd card, but can’t find those clips on my phone once I put the sd card back in. I look in my music album, but alas, no such luck. Even on the external memory. I’m wondering if Telus in BC has blocked it somehow so one can only download ringtones that require paying $5 for. Sad that one can download a song, and pay only.99, but to have a ringtone, it must cost the moon!

  22. Josh says:

    Evie »

If you plug your phone in and go to your hardware manager you should find your phone under modems I think. From thier you can choose to use a different driver and navigate to the .inf file.

If it is unclear Google install new driver and your operating system something should come up.

  23. Evie says:

Hi again Josh…nice name, it also belongs to my son….anyway, I found a website for anyone who is interested in more ways to deal with an lg chocolate flip, but from TELUS, which seems to have other issues than verizon. I won’t post it until I get an ok from someone, I don’t want to do anything wrong, but there is some stuff there, and actual pictures that can help with step by step getting ringtones etc.

  24. Josh says:

    Evie »

It would be be great to post the link in the comments. I’ll check it out and likely add it to the main post to help others.

  25. Evie says:

OK Josh…here it is. There are a lot of posts that go way back, mine are on the very last page, and the suggestions in post #10 work so awesome for Telus lg 8600! I actually got mine to work. So Post 10 has the step by step, but mine are at 302-305, with the final results!!! Here is the link: http://www.howardforums.com/archive/topic/1037702-1.html

  26. Evie says:

apparently I was excited for nothing :( for some reason, only one song actually went onto my phone, after 2 hours of supposedly downloading the ringtones, but when I go to assign them, I get this message: “non-drm protected media can not be used as ringtone.” Any idea what this means?

  27. Josh says:

    Evie »

Unfortunately it seems to mean that Telus has built in some restriction so that protected files are the only ones you can use as ringtones. If this is the case it is their way of locking subscribers into purchasing their ringtones rather than loading their own. Have you checked on the site you sent a link to? You may be able to find someone their who has figured out how to trick the phone into seeing the file as protected.

  28. Evie says:

Hi Josh…Yes, I checked back at the other site too, and will continue to look. It is very frustrating that to have any little extra such as a decent ringtone, the service provider can charge for whatever and however much they like. Like we don’t pay enough as it is. Anyway, thanks so much for all your help…I really do appreciate it.

  29. Pete says:

    Hey Josh,

Can music/ringtones be transferred to the LG8500 via Bluetooth? I have a Bluetooth dongle on my computer and the LG8500 is Bluetooth compatible so I’m just wondering if and how to do this?

    Thanks

  30. Pete says:

Ok, tried using Bitpim to access my LG8500, and it connected but with errors. The bluetooth connection wants to use COM4 for outgoing on my phone and COM5 for the incoming. But, BITPIM wants to just use COM4 and says it can’t use COM5… gotta be a fix for this.

  31. Pete says:

Woo Hoo! I just made an MP3 ringtone and transferred it to my TELUS LG8500 Chocolate, via BLUETOOTH and it works!!!!!!!!! YAY!

  32. amy says:

ok, i followed all the steps that are at the top that darlene said, but every time i try to move a file to the sd card, it says “disk is write-protected” how do i fix this? :/

  33. afallenhope says:

i just got off the phone with TELUS and they seem to block off a lot of BLUETOTTH stuff. is there a way of getting ringtones to work with the LG 8600 straight off the sd card?

  34. Lucy says:

I just got an LG 800 (the slide version of the LG8600), and I can’t get Nikki’s option to work for me. I’ve sent it various times, but my phone doesn’t recieve it.

  35. Mary says:

    hey josh,

I managed to get my ringtones in the ringtone section (using Bitpim) of my 8600 (I’m with telus) and the ringtones appear..you can play them. but when i go to set them as ringtone, it says “NON-DRM protected media cannot be used for ringtone.” Is there any way to work around this?

  36. Josh says:

    Mary »
It is a telus thing to stop users from using their own ringtones so Telus can charge more money. A couple comments up should have a link to more discussion on howardforums.com

Hi, i have a LG 8600 Chocolate through Telus Mobility. I have a data cord and have bitpim. Wondering what i did wrong … thx.

  39. Zackary says:

  40. Terry B says:

Did anyone manager to get the VX8600 from Telus, working with BitPIM and this USB driver?

  41. Nancy says:

There has to be an easier way. I had music on my SD card and it was working fine. I tried putting more stuff on and they never showed up. Now I have reformatted the card and I can’t get anything to show up.

Before when I put the card in and went to my music it would say adding to library. It won’t do that now. The music is on the card and in the my music folder. How do I get the phone to add it to the library???

  42. Jon says:

Hi, I’m having a problem putting music on the card. Like said above when I tried to sync files from WMP, it went into alternate folders not the “my_music” folder that is on the card already. How do I sync it into that specific folder?

Also my friend managed to send some ringtones via bluetooth, but some not. I don’t know if that helps or not.

  43. Josh says:

Are you using Windows Media Player?

In its sync section you should be able to specify what the folder it is synced too.

    Let me know.

  44. Emmanuel says:

Hello, I tried the instructions, I downloaded the USB driver sofware, and after the download it says you can now connect the usb to your computer. I connected the USB to my computer and on my phone it said connected and a while later, it said connect failure. Can anyone help me?

  45. Arjun Sharma says:

I am having the Same problem Emmanuel, have no idea whats going on. I re-installed the drivers, the music programs everything. Help would be great.

  46. Mark man says:

k, for telus people, take ur mini me card, stick it in the card reader USB port adapter thing, use windows media player and sync music to it, it will put it in wrong folder BUT rename the folder it put it in as “MY_MUSIC” very important, now umm go explore that folder and they put a bunch of sub folders in there like band name, record label, and stuff, copy the synced song out of those sub folders and place it strictly under “my_music” folder, and delete all sub folders dadada, HOLD THE PLAY BUTTON on the touch interface and the stupid record lemon player will show, playing ur music, and take it from there, good luck

  47. Hanna says:

I’ve tried to download Bitpim but it keeps telling me the installation files are corrupt. Also, I tried saving the music onto my SD card, but my phone won’t read them. It’s just saying nothing is on it.
