Where Have I Seen This Before

While catching up on my backlog of CSI I had the pleasure of catching this ad for the 2008 Mercury Mariner Hybrid. In the ad the “star” plants the mercury logo and seconds later out sprouts a tree which becomes a new SUV. The idea is pretty slick and it reminded me of a short story by Tobias Buckell called “A Green Thumb” which is set in a future where cars a grown rather than built! I think someone on Madison Avenue (or wherever ads are made these days) is a fan.

  1. I hope the author gets some dinero his way :)

I didn’t realize this at the time but some random Toyota ad for the Prius predates both of these. Though back then it took a full night to grow a hybrid. With all our technological innovations now it is only minutes!
