Thinking of a Re-design

I have been mulling over returning to a three column format in the near future if I can scrape together the time to reformat. If I do I am thinking I would go with the 3 column Cutline theme, an updated version of the site you see now. My main motivations are the use of a third sidebar as the current one is pretty full, and to clean up the formatting of the sidebar which currently has a few issues.

My question is with the popularity of feed readers and mobile access of content is it worth investing significant time in the look and feel of a site. What are your thoughts?
